Hobby Challenges 2023

Hobby Challenges 2023 featured image

The annual getaway of gaming, drinking and general shenanigans is upon us - just one month away! We've set each other challenges to complete, and so I thought I'd share my progress in this post.

Mordheim

Mordheim was possibly my favourite game when I was younger. It was probably the first small skirmish, campaign focused game I played and I loved everything about it - the setting, the gangs, the experience system. To the point where I used write our own magazine to support the campaign as we went along in our fight over shards of Wyrdstone.

Back then I had a Mercenary warband which was comprised mainly of models from my Dogs of War Warhammer Fantasy army. This time around I wanted to do something completely different - and what's more different to squeaky clean, law-abiding and good Mercenaries than evil, blood-sucking Vampires?!

Mordheim

I haven't made a finalised list yet (I'll do that when we get there and start playing), so I've got together a collection of the amazing Undead models from Warhammer Underworlds to have the following:

Vampire 2 Grave Guard 4 Skeletons 2 Dire Wolves

So far I've painted up the Vampire, a Skeleton and the Dire Wolves.

The look I wanted to go for is the Vampire being pristine and clean, with the rest being dirty and grimy - the minions he's summoned to do his dirty work.

I've also seen this as an opportunity to practice my NMM skills. Even though they are gaming pieces and I don't want to sink huge amounts of time into these, it's important to practice things if you want to get better at them! I've learnt a lot to take forward into display pieces in future, and I feel like I'm getting a better understanding of NMM the more I do it.

Inquisition Warband

Now, I'll admit, as far as this article goes the Mordhiem above are the most exciting part! This challenge and the next challenge I'm wanting to keep close to my chest and reveal what I've created to the guys there and then.

That said, I will reveal details around the warband I've created and the inspiration behind it.

The warband comprises of 10 characters. Obviously led by an Inquisitor, but I've bundled together models from 40k and Necromunda to support him in his missions, including am Ogryn named Clout that I'm currently playing in our Dark Heresy campaign. There's even a couple of scratch built models, albeit quite simple creations!

Right now, the whole warband is built and ready for priming. In similar fashion to my Carnevale gang, I'm wanting to be quite thematic with the painting and I want to capture an overall atmosphere for the gang rather than painting them all individually. Here's some art I'm using as inspiration for this process.

Duel

This is the challenge I have set for the guys. The idea being that I'm interested to see what their minds would create if they were to put together a Duel diorama between two characters.

My idea for this is a little outside the box, and I admit even now I've still not ordered the parts I need to make it happen...

Over the next few weeks these challenges should come together nicely, and once everything's been revealed I'll be sure to post up the results!

Until next time!
